2024 USMCA Certified Coaches Insurance Program

Information + Frequently Asked Questions:

Calling all USMCA Certified coaches! The 2024 USMCA Certified Coaches Insurance Program with K&K Insurance is now available and ready for purchase. Here is how it works, along with a few frequently asked questions:

What is the “Program”?
Certified Coaches can become insured under the USMCA policy at an affordable rate and receive their Certificate of Insurance under the USMCA’s policy. The USMCA has purchased an insurance policy for the 2024 year to offer General Liability insurance, on an EXCESS basis, at an affordable rate to USMCA Certified Coaches. This policy is intended as an EXCESS coverage for coaches actively coaching through tracks, promoters, schools, practices, events, races, and programs that already have primary motorsports event insurance coverage allowing you to be further protected for coaching exposures by the USMCA Certified Coaches Insurance Program as a Certified coach.

As an example (dirt bike):
Suppose a coach always instructs their riders at LACR MX (a track with primary motorsports event insurance coverage), and the coach is insured through the USMCA Insurance Program. In that case, the coach is protected through the USMCA Certified Coach Insurance with K&K Insurance. Furthermore, a rider is participating in an event or practice at LACR MX with their coach present, and that rider wrecks and is injured. The rider could make a claim against the coach for teaching them a specific technique that they believe caused the wreck and damages. The track and track policy could make the contention that they have no liability as the coach was working on their own (not hired by the track), and the track was not negligent in any way. The track or event’s coverage might not respond to a coaching claim as it is not a part of their operations. The USMCA/Coach policy would then cover the coach up to the policy limits.

As an example (sport bike):
Suppose a coach always instructs their riders at Thunderhill Raceway (a track with primary motorsports event insurance coverage), and the coach is insured through the USMCA Coaches insurance. In that case, the coach is protected through the USMCA Certified Coach Insurance with K&K Insurance. Furthermore, say a rider is participating in an event or practice at Thunderhill Raceway with their coach present, and that rider wrecks and is injured.

Why is insurance important to me as a coach?
In any business, riders can bring lawsuits against an individual or entity, and it is crucial to guard your assets with insurance. Insurance will protect an individual or entity up to the policy limits.

What type of insurance policy is this?
The USMCA Insurance Program is an excess Commercial General Liability policy that includes participants’ legal liability. The policy covers you while you are at a primary motorsports event-insured facility/event for injury claims of the student brought against the coach. Coverage includes property damage, bodily injury, advertising injury, libel/slander, etc. The policy provides Occurrence coverage, which means you would have coverage as long as the claim occurred during the dates you were covered under the program. So, if you receive a lawsuit or attorney letter 1-2 years after you coached a student, you’re covered if the covered incident occurred during the policy period.

Waivers information and why they are essential?

  • When you become insured with the USMCA Certified Coaches Insurance Program, you will be given the free PDFs of the Adult and Minor Release & Waiver Indemnity Forms.
  • Coaches should use the waivers at all times to help defend you upon any claims.
USMCA coaches who secure insurance through the program would only have to collect one waiver per participant for the full year (annual waiver). Include the description and location of the event(s) on the waiver forms. It should read “2024 events in which {name of coach} is providing instruction to {name of rider}.
  • It is imperative that the waiver not be altered (font or format) and be printed in COLOR to be valid.
  • The forms need to be witnessed by the insured coach. If the insured coach cannot witness the signature, the participant must have it notarized.
  • Minor waivers: Each participant must sign a waiver, so coaches must complete a separate waiver for each minor participant.

Who is the carrier of the insurance policy?
The carrier is MARKEL INSURANCE COMPANY. K&K Insurance is the managing general underwriter, and we work with a K&K representative who is assigned to support our team with the USMCA program. The representative will process all applications, issue the Certificate of Insurance, and is available to answer your insurance-specific questions.

How much does it cost?

  • Dirt Bike Coaches: Insurance is $517.00 total (Decreased after 08/01/24 to $259) for the 2024 policy year (see effective dates below).
  • Sport Bike Coaches: Insurance is $261.00 total (Decreased after 08/01/23 to $132) for the 2024 policy year (see effective dates below).
  • Dual-Certified Coaches: Insurance is $517.00 total (Decreased after 08/01/24 to $259) for the 2024 policy year (see effective dates below).

When does the policy start? When does it expire?

  • The USMCA insurance policy starts on February 1, 2024.

(Note: Each Coach’s coverage will begin on the day K&K Insurance sends the coach their certificate of insurance.)

  • The USMCA insurance policy expires on February 1, 2025.

If my USMCA Certification expires, am I still insured?

USMCA Certification must be active to qualify and participate in the USMCA Certified Coaches Insurance Program.

Policy Limits & Dedu

Does this policy cover my training outside of a closed-course track/facility?
Off-road vehicle parks, mud parks, and non-competitive participation facilities are not covered if the facility or operator does not have a current and valid motorsports insurance policy covering their riding exposures. Suppose a facility or entity asks you to provide them with a certificate of insurance that includes them as an additional insured. In that case, they are asking YOU to provide primary insurance coverage. The USMCA policy ONLY covers the USMCA and certified coaches who have purchased insurance through the USMCA program. It does not include other entities such as promoters, facility operators, or landowners as additional insured.   Those other entities are not covered.   Please reach out to our insurance representative for assistance in obtaining a primary insurance option at an exclusive rate for USMCA Certified coaches.

How can I get Primary event coverage for an event I am hosting?
In this requirement, the coach would be hosting an event where you would need to protect yourself AND the facility. If any certified coach does require primary motorsports event coverage, it can be obtained through K&K Insurance at an exclusive rate for USMCA Certified coaches. To get more details on this, please get in touch with Matt Mowan via email at matt.mowan@kandkinsurance.com or phone at +1 (260) 459-5892, and we can verify that you are USMCA Certified to receive the exclusive rate.
